High Endurance and Sustainable Systems Design


BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Dr Cheng Siong CHIN is a pioneer in establishing research projects with partners from ST-Electronics (large-scale systems group), Seagate, Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD), SembCorp Marine, and Temasek Polytechnic with Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) in Newcastle University, Singapore campus. He is a Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University. His precise research proposal, humble engagement style, applied research vision, and perseverance have greatly helped him to secure these research projects under stiff competition. Before joining Newcastle University, he was a Lecturer in Mechatronics Engineering at Temasek Polytechnic. He worked in electronics and electrical industry for few years before moving into academia. He currently holds 3 U.S. Patents, 2 provisional US patent applications and 2 Trade Secrets. Since 2013, he obtained 2 research grants from SMI and 2 EDB-Industrial Postgraduate Programme (IPP) on the areas of marine mechatronic systems design and noise prediction. He had supervised project on the mechatronic design of DHI-ROV and underwater sediment trap device (powered by fuel cell) funded by Maritime Port of Authority. He managed to secure approximately S$1.4M project values (which he is the key contributor for the successful research bids. He has published nearly 70 journal papers, book chapters, book and conference papers involving modelling, simulation, remote monitoring, noise prediction, and control systems design of marine mechatronic systems. His quality of research-informed teachings, were demonstrated by few student scholarships such as RINA, Keppel Award, IMarEST, BAE Systems and MTS ROV Committee Scholarship. Dr Chin is the Fellow of the Higher-Education Academy (FHEA), Fellow of IMarEST (FIMarEST), Senior Member of IEEE (SMIEEE), Chartered Engineer, European Engineer and member of IET. He is an active reviewer of IEEE Transactions. He had authored a book entitled Computer-aided Control Systems Design: Practical Applications using MATLAB and Simulink published by CRC Press, USA in 2012.
